There is not one single way of reducing the finance gap for water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). A range of measures may need to be taken to influence the multiple financial flows in the sector and need to be well coordinated and sequenced for maximum effectiveness. Developing a WASH finance strategy is a central step in articulating the measures to be taken. This case study reviews the experiences in developing and implementing such strategies from across multiple countries, highlighting the experience of Malawi and Rwanda. This brief case study was written for the 2025 SWA Sector Ministers' Meeting held in Madrid, 22-23 October.
