This learning paper, developed under the FCDO-funded WASH Systems for Health programme (2023–2026), examines how monitoring approaches have evolved in the sector and draws on WASH Systems for Health's real-world experience across six countries (Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Malawi and Tanzania) to offer practical guidance on monitoring systems strengthening and change. It addresses three learning questions: what trends can be observed in how WASH projects are monitored, how systems strengthening and systems interventions can be monitored, and what the way forward is for systems monitoring.
